Mindfulness is the practice of ‘being fully present in the moment’. It’s a different sort of awareness to the ‘automatic pilot’ that we are so often immersed in – like when we’re driving or walking and don’t notice the details of the journey because we’re lost in thought. It can often be very difficult to be ‘in the moment’ as we can very easily become distracted by what is going on around us or by our own thoughts. People can ‘train’ to be more mindful in many ways such as through doing mindfulness courses, listening to cds, reading books or participating in mindfulness retreats, although probably the most helpful way to learn is with an experienced mindfulness teacher.
I started attending Aspen in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not an easy time for many people. The lockdown gave me time to reflect on how I was feeling and really made me realize that I should get help. A family member recommended Aspen to me. After my first session with Helen, I never looked back. Although I was extremely nervous, she made me feel so at ease. I already felt that I could tell her absolutely anything in confidence. I looked forward to talking to Helen every week. Helen gave me the tools to help myself and, in a way, to be my own counsellor. Helen helped me deal with panic attacks and just being happier in myself, in general. Helen has made me realise all that I have to offer the world. Others around me have noticed a huge difference in my mood, confidence and overall presence. I can’t thank Aspen and Helen enough for all they have done for me on my mental health journey. I am forever grateful for all that Helen has taught me and all the help she has given me. Thank you Aspen!
"I was feeling very low before I finally decided to get help. I was having family issues and was very low in confidence. I booked an appointment with Helen and after our first session I realised that I had made the right decision. She helped me to see myself in a different light and to rediscover who I am. I was made to feel very comfortable and I felt it was a space where I could really open up. I feel that my life has completely changed in a number of weeks. I am very happy with who I have become. I have learned to change my reactions and thought process and feel empathy towards others. These are skills I will hold for life. I am able to be proud of myself and recognise my talents. I finally feel alive again. I would definitely recommend counselling to anyone who is going through a tough time. Thank you."
"When I First Enquired About Counselling I Was A Complete Mess. Despite Being Quite A Social Person And Heavily Involved In Sporting Clubs, I Felt So Sad And Lonely. I Had Zero Self-Esteem Or Self-Confidence. I Used Food As My Crutch And Was Definitely What You Consider An ‘Emotional Eater’. I Was Completely Incapable Of Making Decisions/Talking About My Feelings, I Was Unable To Say ‘No’ And Was The Definition Of A ‘People Pleaser’. I Finally Made The Brave Decision To Ring Aspen Counselling, Who Put Me In Touch With My Counsellor Fiona And I Am Pleased To Say, I Have Never Looked Back. The First Few Sessions Were Very Painful And A Blur If I’m Honest. I Think I Spent Most Of That Time Crying And Would Leave Each Session With Big, Puffy, Swollen Eyes. But As Each Session Passed I Began To Understand Why I Was Feeling And Acting The Way I Was. Fiona Simply ‘Got Me’ From Our Initial Meeting And We Have Worked Together In Sync For The Past Five And A Half Years. Fiona Listened To Me, Understood Me, Requested Me To Dig Deep And Answer Questions In Relation To My Past, Never Judged Me, Offered Me Advice, Set Me Challenges And Pushed Me To Be The Best Version Of Myself I Could Be. I Am Now 38 Years Of Age And The Happiest I Have Ever Been In My Life. Every Aspect Of My Life Has Changed Dramatically: My Health, Social/Personal/Love/Professional Life Have All Been Turned Upside Down. I Always Dreamed Of This Day And Through Hard Work And Determination And Having Fiona’s Words Of Wisdom Ringing In My Ears, I Feel I Can Conquer Any Challenge That Lies Ahead. I Am More Confident And Willing To Talk About My Feelings And Difficult Situations. I Feel So In Tune With Myself And Am Well Equipped With The Skills To Continue To Persevere And Push Through Any Obstacle Life Presents. I Am Literally So Proud Of Myself And All I Have Achieved. I Have The Life I Wished For And More Importantly The Life I Deserve. I Would Highly Recommend Counselling And Simply ‘Talking’ To Anyone Who Is Going Through A Difficult Patch."
Helen, Thank you so much for your help. You have changed my life forever and I am so grateful to you. Best Wishes
